Setting: The stories about the Gods of old? They’re all true. And what’s more is that they’re still around and procreating right and left. It’s modern day Earth and really the only difference? The Gods are very much alive and they’re very much still creating problems left and right. Mortals don’t see this, mind you, because of something called the Mist. It makes mortals believe that the supernatural occurrences are no more than normal, everyday things.
In this world, the Big Three (Zeus, Hades and Poseidon) have made a pact not to have anymore children as theirs end up being more powerful than the others and all hell basically breaks loose. Gods being Gods, however, Zeus and Poseidon just can’t keep it in their pants… Thus we have Percy Jackson, Jason and Thalia Grace. As per the stories of the past, the Gods still have trouble with everything and tend to make enemies of the Titans again and again. What does this have to do with Calypso, who was stuck on her own island in a place out of time, you ask? Well, she gets to clean up wounded heroes and make sure they’re all better so they can go finish their quests. It’s a difficult job, but someone’s gotta do it.
Calypso made the mistake of supporting her father, a Titan, in the First Titan War against the Gods. She didn’t necessarily do anything, but when the Gods won the war, her punishment was to be exiled on her island of Ogygia. They would send her the company of a hero every thousand years or so, but it was always someone she’d fall in love with. And it was always someone that would leave her. The Gods themselves visit, but that in itself is rare.
Percy Jackson was sent to her in the Second Titan War and she offered him an out, a way to not have to go back to the prophecy that governed his life. He declined, but promised that in his terms, the Gods would free Calypso from her island.
They didn’t and now the Romans were introduced to the Greeks, although both sets of demigods have always existed. What’s more is that even more ancient evils are coming to play. Gaea is awakening and threatening everything. A prophecy begins, bringing together 7 demigods… A few Greek and a few Roman.
Again, what does this have to do with Calypso? She’s still sitting on her island, withdrawn from time and the normal world as it is. However, she’s sent another hero at this point and refuses to care for him. Leo Valdez is not your average hero and she takes it to mean that the Gods are just playing games with her at this point. When Gaea appears and offers her one of her past heroes for company, namely Percy Jackson, if she is to get rid of Leo, Calypso takes a stand and chooses her side in this war.
She chooses to stand against Gaea and back up the Gods, despite still being stuck on her island. Leo leaves the island eventually, and Calypso remains. That is where her story ends-- She does not leave her island and the demigods chosen for the quest to stop Gaea from winning this battle continue on their way.
Personality:
Calypso has withdrawn into herself in her isolation. The “young” immortal has been hurt several times throughout her time on Ogygia and has taken to guarding herself from being hurt by withdrawing and being cautious. The Gods send heroes to her to be cared for and healed… But eventually, they all must leave her. Calypso tries her hardest to pull away because she cannot help but fall in love with the heroes they send her, but she always fails.
She nurtures the heroes back to health, showing them kindness like she did with Percy. She wants to make sure they know she cares for them, even though she knows full well what the Fates have in store for her. How could she not, after all, when she’s suffered this punishment for thousands of years old? She wants to show them that if they were to accept her offer of staying, they would not regret it. She feeds them, offers them help and cures their ailments and injuries. To others, Calypso comes off as shy and quiet. This is part of her front, part of her attempt to keep people at bay as she’s been left a few too many times. Percy noted that she constantly stopped herself from enjoying her time with him while he was on the island, pulling away right when she was starting to have fun or smile. It was easier for her to distract herself with her gardening and various hobbies than to become attached to yet another hero.
Her visitors may find her naive in the sense that she has never once left Ogygia, which was her birthplace, and that she knows very little of the outside world. She is in a time forgotten, untouched by technology. Her visitors only ever consist of stranded heroes and a few of the Gods if they’re particularly bored. She only knows of Manhattan and its lack of gardens because Percy told her about it during his stay.
Calypso is loyal to her family, to a fault nearly. She supported Atlas, her father, in the First Titan War and for that reason she accepts her punishment to remain on Ogygia with no regrets. Family is important and even if she knows they are wrong, she brings up a point to Percy, wondering if he is loyal to the Gods because they are good or because they are family. Still, having learned her lesson and given the time to think over what’s good and what’s worth standing up for, Calypso is stubborn almost to a fault when it comes to standing her ground. Gaea offered to bring Percy back to her if she got rid of Leo… Calypso did not agree to this, as she hates being told what to do. It brings out the even more stubborn streak in her.
Percy had promised her that the Gods would get her off the island after the Second war, and when they failed to do so, Calypso became bitter and angry. When Leo was sent to her, she was hostile to him at first, irritated by his very presence. It was just another way for the Gods to get back at her. To send her someone so irritating and annoying that she would never be rid of him. That she would be stuck with his company forever. She did not show Leo the same kindness she had with Percy and other heroes and often threw small tantrums when he was particularly irritating.
Despite her shy exterior, she is an immortal who will firmly stand her ground and isn’t afraid to snap or make smart remarks when irritated, as is displayed with most of her interactions with Leo. Still, she does take care of him despite it all, bringing him fresh clothing and healing his wounds… Swearing to find a way off the island for him when Gaea threatens him. She made a poor decision on who to side with in the First Titan War, she was not going to make the same mistake twice.
Arriving on the turtle, Calypso is going to have quite a bit of trouble adjusting. The idea that she is between the realm of life, dreaming and death is not so strange to her, perhaps, since her island and very existence is in a time of its own where time travels much stranger than on Earth. However, she has only ever had one visitor at a time on her island and has otherwise been in seclusion with no one to talk to. As such, she’ll appear very anti-social because she’ll be so overwhelmed by everything. To add onto this, she is not used to modern civilization in any form, so she will be slightly overwhelmed by this too- if not terribly curious about everything that she has no access to on her Island.
Appearance: Calypso appears as a slender young woman, no more than 16 years old, with dark almond shaped eyes. She smells of cinnamon, has caramel colored hair nearly always braided and has a face described as “timeless”. While generally opting for her usual white gown, Calypso has no problem with donning a t-shirt and some jeans when she needs to get her hands dirty. She has that effortless beauty about her as someone who doesn’t particularly *try* to be beautiful, she just happens upon it.
The PB I will be using is Jane Aldridge, as I feel she really embodies these qualities.
Abilities: Calypso’s abilities are rather tame compared to the other immortals of the series. Her voice has a magical quality to it that, when she sings, can heal any injuries of the person she’s singing to. She can weave clothing quickly by help of her magic and often makes specialty clothing for herself and those who stay with her. With perhaps a bit of an enhanced green thumb, Calypso is also an excellent gardener, however that might have more to do with her isolation than any special abilities.
Inventory: Calypso will only be bringing the white gown she’s arrived in. Otherwise, she has nothing of note to be sent to Keeliai.
Suite: Calypso has no need for extravagance. The Earth sector in one of the organic homes would suit her perfectly and make her feel a little more at home on the turtle. However, she is adaptable and will work to fit in wherever she needs to.
In-Character Samples:
Third Person:
It wasn’t Ogygia. She was thankful for that, at the very least. Another island lost in time, albeit a little different, wasn’t so strange to her. It might be on a turtle’s back, yes. It might be in a civilization that has her positively overwhelmed, sure. But the fact of the matter was, she was off Ogygia by some strange miracle, and had the chance to interact with everyone…. Not only injured heroes that would eventually leave her without a second thought.
Did they ever have a second thought when they returned to their homes? She couldn’t tell, not with her magic being so limited that she could only see the past. Even if they did give her another passing thought, though, it would not change anything. They couldn’t return to her so what did it really matter?
No, here she would have the chance to befriend more than those who would just leave her. She had the chance to live, despite the learning curve she might have. Tugging her shawl closer around her shoulders, Calypso started to weave her way through the market, pausing to look at the offered goods every so often, smiling at those who smiled at her and brightening at every passing comment. It wouldn’t be so bad here, not really. She could find a job, make friends… Do everything that the Gods had denied her back home.
Do what the Gods themselves did, live amongst and near the mortals. A basic right that they denied her thousands of years and continued to deny her. After all, what did it matter that the young Titan girl was still stranded on her island when the Gods, all high and mighty, had problems of their own to deal with? Who would even notice?
Network:
[The young woman that is currently fumbling with the device is clothed in a white, Grecian gown. She chews on her lip as she struggles briefly to work it, brushing her long braid over her shoulder to keep it out of the way. After fidgeting, she sets it down and sits in front of it, eyes burning with curiosity.]
Good day… I was wondering if it might be possible for someone to help me learn my way around this place? I would appreciate that quite a bit.
[A brief pause and she pulls away, her smile fading just a hair and her eyes becoming distant.]
I’d also like to know… And this is quite a stretch to be perfectly honest… If there’s anyone I’m familiar with here? As it is, I know so few people that the odds are slim to none… I still cannot help but hope…
[She forces another smile to her lips, sad and longing, before turning off the feed.]
